The announcement, led by Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga ‘GB’ Agboola, introduces expanded payment options for Nigerian online merchants, representing a substantial step forward in connecting global markets with African commerce.

The partnership enables Flutterwave’s e-commerce merchants in Nigeria to accept payments from all categories of American Express Card Members, including consumer, business, and corporate cardholders. Following the initial implementation in Nigeria, Flutterwave CEO Agboola confirmed plans to extend these capabilities across other African nations, specifically targeting Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana, and Uganda.

Demonstrating its market leadership, Flutterwave has processed an impressive volume exceeding 630 million transactions, with a total value surpassing USD $31 billion. This achievement reflects the company’s sophisticated payment infrastructure, which serves prominent clients including Uber and Air Peace through its comprehensive API platform.

In discussing the strategic importance of this initiative, Flutterwave CEO Agboola emphasized the company’s dedication to enhancing global-African payment connectivity. The partnership addresses key market needs by providing merchants with access to American Express’s extensive cardholder network while offering consumers greater payment flexibility, effectively strengthening American Express’s presence across African markets.

Briana Wilsey, Vice President and General Manager of Global Network Services EMEA at American Express, highlighted the partnership’s dual benefits, noting how it expands payment accessibility for businesses while enhancing American Express’s service coverage in Nigerian markets. This collaboration promises to streamline payment processes for cardholders while bolstering operational capabilities for e-commerce enterprises utilizing Flutterwave’s platform.

The announcement builds upon Flutterwave’s recent accomplishments, including securing a Payment Service Provider license from Ghana’s central bank and establishing operations in Mozambique. Through its extensive network spanning 34 African countries, Flutterwave facilitates diverse transaction types, encompassing local and international card payments, mobile wallet transfers, and various digital payment methods.

This strategic alliance represents a significant milestone in African financial technology development, positioning Flutterwave as a key facilitator of digital commerce innovation. The integration of American Express’s global network with Flutterwave’s regional expertise creates new opportunities for business expansion while enhancing consumer payment options.

The partnership underscores Flutterwave’s commitment to advancing Africa’s digital payment infrastructure, establishing new standards for cross-border commerce, and promoting financial inclusion across the continent.
